SEND Education Support Service (SEND ESS)

Who are we?

The SEND Education Support Service (SEND ESS) is a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Advisory Teachers, Advisors, Counsellors, Specialist Assistants and Officers.

The service consists of specialists in the following areas: Communication and Interaction (C&I), Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH), and Physical and Sensory needs (Deafness, Visual Impairment, and Multi-Sensory Impairment).

Advisory teachers are qualified teachers with experience and/or additional qualifications that enable them to provide specialist advice to schools on SEND.

Advisors, Counsellors, Specialist Assistants, and Officers come from a range of backgrounds, all of whom have relevant experience supporting children with SEND and are specialists in their field.

What do we do?

Each Havering school has a ‘Team Around the School’ (TaS) comprising of different members of the SEND Service. Each school has an allocated Advisory Teacher and Advisor for C&I and for SEMH, as well as an Educational Psychologist.

The team is flexible and meets the needs of each school as required, but typically they would:

  • Discuss school’s training and other development needs
  • Deliver training to teachers and other staff
  • Help with creating, reviewing, adapting and implementing specific support plans for pupils with SEND
  • Complete individual or joint (alongside the SENCo) observations of individual or groups of pupils to inform support planning
  • Model and coach approaches to school staff in ‘live’ situations (e.g. emotion coaching)
  • Help school leaders with strategic planning and organisation for SEND

How do schools Access our services?

Each school receives a specific allocation of days for each professional in their Team Around the School.

It is for the school SENCo to work with their TaS members to decide how to best use their time to suit the needs of their school. This is usually decided through the termly planning meetings.

We do not accept referrals from other local authority services, partner agencies or parents.
