Volunteer Youth Worker
Havering Youth Service - Volunteering Opportunities
Role Description
We provide support that improves outcomes for children and young people between 10 and 18 years old, and up to 25 for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Depending on your area of interest this may involve 1:1 support, group work support, detached street based youth work or supporting on offsite educational visits such as to the theatre. For example, we offer gender specific groups GRL academy, Good Fellas, LGBTQA+ group, as well as more universal youth clubs.
We are moving towards operating a targeted model of practice, this means we are more likely to offer a service to those young people who have additional needs such as SEND, and LGBTQ+ community, those living with neurodiversity, on child protection plans, care experienced, or victims of exploitation. However, we also wish to continue with a universal offer of support where possible.
We believe that people from the local community who want to affect change by listening to young people, work with them and learn from them is an amazing first step.
“ …..Youth work offers young people safe spaces to explore their identity, experience
decision-making, increase their confidence, develop inter-personal skills and
think through the consequences of their actions.
This leads to better informed choices, changes in activity and
improved outcomes for young people …..” (NYA, 2023)
We are looking for individuals that are passionate about investing their time in young people’s futures, we ideally would like individuals who are able to offer regular consistent support throughout the year to enable trusting relationships to be built with our young people.
Regular training opportunities will be offered to volunteers on areas such as Safeguarding, First Aid, Exploitation, Group Work skills, or any other areas identified as a learning need by the volunteer and the supervisor during supervision. Any costs of training and reasonable expenses will be met by Havering Council.
You will have regular supervision sessions as a chance to reflect about any challenges, improve practice and receive support if required with your career development goals.
Ideally you would have some experience working with young people aged 10 yrs. + or young adults either in a voluntary or paid capacity.
Experience with young people with additional needs would be great.
Personal lived experiences from growing up in the care system, being part of the LGBTQ community or living with neurodiversity can be beneficial to relate to some of our young people’s challenges.
Any experience in creative pursuits such as music, drama, dance, art, poetry would be fantastic to support young people to take part in these activities.
Any relevant qualifications such as Youth Work, Childcare, Safeguarding Children or Adults, First Aid, Food Hygiene would be amazing.
Age restrictions: 18+
Training for our volunteer Youth Worker roles will take place in January and February 2025.
