Havering Young People's Mentor Service

What does this service offer?

Volunteer mentors work with a young person on a one-to-one basis for a period of six months. Meetings take place each week, and the service has a small budget to pay for activities and/or refreshments. By writing a plan with the young person, a Mentor helps to make positive changes in their lives and focus on what is important to them, so that they can reach their potential. Young people might need some support with the following areas of their lives:

  • Education
  • Mental health and wellbeing
  • Something important that has happened, such as a big change, an incident or a loss
  • Making healthy relationships
  • Behaviour choices and consequences
  • Positive choices for the future
  • Independence skills

Is my young person eligible?

All we ask is that each young person is aged 10-18 years old, living in Havering and willing to be matched with a Mentor. Please be aware that our Mentor Service works with young people with their concerns at an early stage, so we may refer you on to another service if we think they will better meet your needs.

How do I ask for a Mentor?

If you are interested in Havering’s Young People’s Mentor Service, please complete the online referral form, which is available from the External Links section on the right-hand side of this page.

If you would like to find out more about the service and whether it is right for your young person, please email the Volunteer and Advocacy Team at: earlyhelpvolunteer@havering.gov.uk.

What will happen next?

We will meet with your young person to ask them about what they would like a Mentor to help with and what type of Mentor they would like to be matched with. We will introduce each young person to their Mentor at their home or at a local children's centre, before meetings take place, to make sure they feel comfortable.
