Pre-Supported Internships and Supported Internships

What are Pre-Supported Internships?

Who are Pre-Supported Internships for?

Pre-Supported Internships are for young people aged 16 to 24 with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) who have an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan. If you want to get ready for work, build your confidence, and try out a real job, this could be for you. This is a good first step before doing a full supported internship.

What are the benefits of a Pre-Supported Internship?

You get to spend two days a week in education and two days a week in a real workplace. You will learn new skills, meet new people, and get help to feel more confident outside of school or college. You can also get support to learn how to travel by yourself and become more independent.

What would I have to do as a Supported Intern?

You will go to your educational setting, like a college, for part of the week, and to your work placement for the other part. You will get support from staff to help you do your best. If you need help with travel or learning, you can ask for it. The aim is to help you feel comfortable and ready for work in the future.

How do I find out more about Supported Internships?

If you want to join a supported internship, you or your family can talk to the local authority's SEND team. They will talk with you about what you need and help you find support. If you do not feel ready at 16, you can join when you are older. The team will help you decide the best time for you.

You can also ask your local college or training centre about supported internships. They can tell you how to join and what help you can get. You can ask for information in a way that is easy for you to understand.
