Assessment and advice

Delivered in the home and/or education setting, we provide communication assessments to investigate the child or young person’s understanding and use of language, social interaction skills. The assessment may involve standardised assessments but our Speech and Language Therapy team work flexibly to gather the required information using a variety of means. This may include:

  • Case history with family/ guardians and/or care staff
  • Information gathering sessions with care and/or education staff
  • Observations in the educational setting and home
  • Direct assessment through play, discussions and/or assessment tools.

Our Speech and Language Therapy team can present our assessment findings in a range of accessible and user-friendly ways, ranging from comprehensive reports to Communication Passports. Our Speech and Language Therapist may recommend further assessment to further investigate a particular area of communication. Communication aims can be set for the child and/or young person’s team to work towards their goals in achievable steps.
