Young Carers at Xaverian College

Xaverian College Logo

This service is for young people who are attending Xaverian College.

At Xaverian, we endeavour to identify and support any young person who identifies as a young carer.

Our Welfare Officer, Cornelia Byrne, is our Young Carer Champion and has supported our young carers at the college for many years. Cornelia offers a friendly, informed and supportive service to any young person identifying as a young carer. Cornelia will conduct an individual review with all students who identify as young carers. She will liaise with other staff surrounding that student (e.g. the pastoral tutor, the pastoral manager, the safeguarding manager, the college counsellor, the academic mentors) to ensure that the student has all support needed.

We endeavour to identify young carers from application, reaching out to our feeder schools during enrolment to ask for supportive information from themselves so we can offer support from their first day. We will communicate with parents at the start of each year to ask them to inform us of any young person who is a young carer. We train our staff on what a young carer is, and how this impacts on their studies and who is supporting them.

We will have a designated young carer’s display board and support them to access external services where relevant.

We are committed to the young carers in Manchester and are looking to achieve the Carers Trust UK Young Carers in School awards.
