The Docherty Project (Great Places Housing Group)

The Docherty Project offers specialist support and accommodation for men and women who need help maintaining accommodation because of difficulties related to alcohol use. We do not demand that customers stop drinking alcohol; instead, the project uses a model of 'harm reduction' to encourage customers to reduce alcohol related harm. Individual drinking plans can be agreed with customers to stabilise alcohol consumption and sharing alcohol is discouraged. We offer support that promotes independence and improves health and wellbeing. Customers are supported to move on into more permanent accommodation, suited to their individual needs.
Person centred wellbeing plans are created with customers and are reviewed regularly, in order to identify and support them to achieve, their individual goals.
The project offers three types of accommodation, including bedsits for people with higher support needs requiring meal and laundry provision, and flats within a main house which is staffed 24 hours a day. There are also several shared and single occupancy houses close to the main house visited by the Housing and Wellbeing Officers.
The project has staff onsite 24/7 to provide support to customers as required.
Docherty Project was voted the 2025 Northern Housing Awards Supported Housing Scheme of the year.
