Young Carers Support Not Sympathy Logo. A light blue circle with black lettering.

Welcome to the Manchester Young Carers Partnership Awards – now open to all settings that support children and young people, including schools, youth and play providers, creative arts, sports organisations, and health services.

By taking part, your organisation will gain a deeper understanding of the valuable contribution young carers make and the vital role you play in helping them reach their potential.

These awards have been coproduced with our young carers, their young carer champions and reflect the UNICEF Rights of a child, supporting our citywide ambition to achieve Child Friendly City Status.

Why These Awards Matter

These awards underpin Manchester’s city-wide ambition outlined in our Young Carers Strategy 2024-2028. Young carers have told us they value their caring role and want their voices reflected in the services that support them. Together, we can ensure young carers understand their rights, are not providing inappropriate levels of care, and have time for education, friendships, and relaxation.

Watch our Young Carers Strategy Video narrated by young carers themselves, to hear their hopes and expectations for a truly Child Friendly City.

Our Partnership Approach

In Manchester, we do not commission a standalone young carers service. Instead, we work through a Young Carers Partnership a collaborative approach that brings together schools, youth and play providers, health services, and community organisations.

By taking part in the award, your organisation will also become a member of the Manchester Young Carers Partnership, joining a city-wide network committed to supporting young carers.

Young Carers SPACES Award (Youth Play and Creative)

The Manchester Young Carers SPACES Award.

The SPACES Award celebrates organisations committed to supporting Manchester young carers through, youth, play, arts culture, entertainment and sports.

The acronym SPACES is taken from a recent study by The University of Manchester, as part of the #BeeWell project, which found strong positive links between supporting participation in arts, culture, entertainment, and sports -“SPACES”- and improvements in young people’s wellbeing.

We felt that SPACES perfectly reflects the broad range of settings that engage with young people in our city, from libraries, arts and cultural venues and community organisations, to youth and play providers, sports clubs and voluntary sector partners.

These are the places where young carers can find connections, opportunity and build interests beyond their caring roles.

This award reflects the ongoing collaborative work taking place in our city , and incorporates practical tools and resources to support your work with children and young people.

Co-produced with young carers, young carer champions and practitioners, the award aims to help organisations work in a way that ensures a consistent, inclusive and equitable approach for young carers. It also supports us in our shared commitment to become a UNICEF Child-Friendly city.

This award includes all the tools and resources you will need, conveniently hyperlinked for easy access.
