Vitamin D, Folic Acid and Free Vitamins

Everyone should take vitamin D in pregnancy and when breastfeeding. Some people will need a higher dose of vitamin D. Ask your midwife if you are unsure how much you should be taking. Taking vitamin D in pregnancy may lower the chance of gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia and low birth weight babies.

Everyone should also take folic acid, ideally from 3 months before pregnancy but you should start as soon as possible if you are not already taking it. Ask your midwife if you are unsure how much you should be taking.

You might be able to get free Healthy Start vitamins for you and your baby. Ask at your local Family Hub, Children’s Centre or your midwife.
